Plates 193 & 196
One sheet each of 193 and 196 were also printed but never used, thus the stamps from these sheets exist in the unused form only. The above blocks are identical one each from these sheets. These stamps were on the wall of the Collector’s Club in New York until they ended up in the J. C. North collection.
On 2nd of May 1956, these two sheets came up for auction in London at Robson Lowe Ltd. They were initially offered as thirty-five separate lots in identical blocks as per the illustration on the left.
Since then, a lot of these blocks have been cut down to smaller blocks or singles and are usually offered as identical pairs.
The largest offering since 1956, was the "Edward M. Gilbert" sale by Spink with 12 lots (443-454)
