HALF PIASTRE Denomination
There is a large number of varieties that have to do with the Half Piastre stamp all of which either on "CYPRUS" or the "HALF PIASTRE". The most significant ones are the damaged "S" on plate 3 that was corrected on plate 4. The other significant variety is the inverted watermark with only 2-3 stamp recorded to date.
Two 30 Paras and a single ½ Piastre stamps for a total rate of 2 piastres, this being the normal foreign letter rate for letters not exceeding the basic weight The cover is postmarked Limassol March 6th, 1997 destined for Canada and also has an arrival back stamp at Canada of March 28th, 1997. Furthermore the left 30 Paras stamp, shows the damaged “US” variety. The variety occurs at position row 5, column 5 of both panes.
The ½ piastre stamp on a locally mailed cover postmarked “RURAL SERVICE V.R. ORA” and an additional date stamp from the regional post office at Lefkara on February 22, 1998 to Larnaca. On arrival a back stamp was applied of Feb 23, 1998. VR Covers are rare with the Ora one recording no more than five to date.
Four ½ piastre stamps paying the foreign letter rate of 2 piastres to Halifax in Canada. The rare "KILANI" pen cancellation on all four stamps additionally cancelled with the barred "975" Limassol cancellation. Back stamped Limassol, 11 June 1898 and an arrival cancellation of Halifax - Canada, 1 July 1898. There are only three covers with this pen cancellation recorded so far.
